Federal Council discusses the status of discussions on US tariffs
Berne, 25.06.2025 — During the meeting on 25 June 2025, Federal President Karin Keller-Sutter and Vice President Guy Parmelin informed the Federal Council about the status of discussions with the United States on the definitive removal of additional tariffs announced by the United States. The Federal Department of Finance (FDF) and the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER) were instructed to continue discussions with the United States, with the aim of achieving the swift conclusion of a non-binding memorandum of understanding.
The United States has repeatedly acknowledged that Switzerland is acting in good faith. Accordingly, the Federal Council assumes that when the announced 90-day grace period expires, i.e. on 9 July 2025, tariffs will be maintained at the current rate of 10% while discussions are ongoing. However, as there has not yet been a corresponding US presidential decision, it cannot be ruled out that the tariffs, which the United States refers to as “reciprocal”, will be reintroduced with effect from 9 July 2025.
The Federal Council continues to pursue the goal of achieving agreement with the United States on the definitive removal of additional tariffs. It will systematically inform the responsible parliamentary committees and the Presiding College of the Council on progress in this matter and – where appropriate – will consult the relevant committees. In urgent cases, it will consult the committee chairpersons.
