President of the Swiss Confederation visits Kuwait
On 28 November, President Johann N. Schneider-Ammann was received by Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Kuwait’s head of state, for an official visit. The visit by the Swiss president forms part of an intensified series of diplomatic visits to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Kuwait which began in 1966.

The Francophonie Summit took place on 26 and 27 November in the Madagascan capital, Antananarivo. The theme was ‘Sharing growth and responsible development: conditions for stability in the world and the French-speaking area’. President Johann N. The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and his wife Ban Soon-taek paid a farewell visit to Switzerland on Tuesday, 4 October. President Johann N. Schneider-Ammann thanked the outgoing UN Secretary-General for his ten years of dedicated service at the head of the United Nations. They also discussed current challenges and relations between Switzerland and the UN.

President Johann N. Schneider-Ammann presented Switzerland’s goals and priorities for 2017 at 71st UN General Assembly today. In his speech he also stressed the important role of a prosperous economy in bringing stability and security. The president will attend a number of events while in New York including a dinner hosted by US President Barack Obama.

On 19 September President Johann N. Schneider-Ammann met with the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, to discuss the state of relations between Switzerland and the European Union (EU). Among the topics discussed was the implementation of Article 121a of the Federal Constitution on immigration.

On 18 August President Johann N. Schneider-Ammann received a visit from around 40 young Swiss living abroad. Switzerland is proud of Swiss nationals living abroad, he said. He showed the group the Federal Council chamber and explained the importance of democracy. The president also encouraged the group of young visitors to speak out and get involved. That is what democracy is all about.

The summit was dedicated to celebrating the 20th anniversary of ASEM, emphasising the partnership between Asia and Europe and connecting the continents.

On Tuesday, 12 July, President Johann N. Schneider-Ammann has been received in Singapore for a state visit. This is in recognition of the close cooperation between Switzerland and Singapore and comes ahead of the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations in 2017. The president held official talks with President Tony Tan Keng Yam, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and other ministers.

Der Gesamtbundesrat hat am 1. Juni 2016 unter der Leitung von Bundespräsident Johann N. Schneider-Ammann an den Einweihungsfeierlichkeiten des neuen Gotthard-Eisenbahntunnels teilgenommen. President Johann N. Schneider-Ammann signed a development and cooperation agreement with the ILO on Monday, 30 May. In his speech before the plenary he called for greater efforts to meet the challenges facing the world of work in the future and stressed the importance of framework conditions conducive to creating decent jobs.


President meets Pope in Rome

President Johann N. Schneider-Ammann met the Pope in the Vatican on Saturday. Subjects addressed during discussions with the head of the Catholic Church and then with Archbishop Paul R. Gallagher, the foreign minister of the Holy See, included bilateral relations between Switzerland and the Holy See and the situation of refugees. The day before the president had attended the swearing-in of the Papal Swiss Guard.

President Johann N. Schneider-Ammann met President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Friday, 8 April, during his state visit to China. The two sides agreed on an Innovative Strategic Partnership. This will give an added dimension and fresh impulse to Sino-Swiss bilateral relations.

Start of President’s visit to China
President Johann N. Schneider-Ammann was invited to pay a state visit to the People’s Republic of China. The visit provides an opportunity to further deepen the bilateral relations successfully fostered in recent years. The political talks began on Thursday, 7 April, with a meeting with Premier Li Keqiang in the Great Hall of the People.


Bundesrat Johann N. Schneider-Ammann ist am 9. Dezember 2015 von der Vereinigten Bundesversammlung zum Bundespräsidenten für das kommende Jahr gewählt worden. Seit der Entstehung des modernen Bundesstaates ist er das 98. Mitglied des Bundesrates in diesem Amt. Das Eidgenössische Departement für Wirtschaft, Bildung und Forschung (WBF) fungiert 2016 als Präsidialdepartement, eine Rolle, die es zuletzt 2010 innehatte. Anlässlich seiner Wahl zum Bundespräsidenten 2016 gab Bundesrat Schneider-Ammann bekannt, welche Schwerpunkte er in seinem Präsidialjahr setzen möchte.

Sein Motto „Gemeinsam für Jobs und unser Land“ unterstreicht das Engagement für eine hohe Beschäftigung und damit eine Perspektive für alle. In seiner Rede vor der Vereinigten Bundesversammlung betonte der WBF-Vorsteher, unser Land stehe vor grossen Herausforderungen. Er werde sich mit voller Energie und Begeisterung für die Bündelung der Kräfte einsetzen – zur Bewahrung von Wohlstand, Sicherheit, Freiheit und Souveränität.
