Switzerland and Japan are keen to strengthen scientific cooperation

Bern, 05.05.2017 - On 5 May, Mauro Dell’Ambrogio, State Secretary for Education, Research and Innovation, and Toshiei Mizuochi, State Minister of Education, Culture Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, signed a declaration of intent in Bern to strengthen cooperation in the field of science and technology.

During their meeting in Bern, Mr Dell’Ambrogio and Mr Mizuochi discussed Switzerland’s and Japan’s highly successful cooperation in the field of education, research and innovation, and the possibility of further strengthening the partnership in the future.
The meeting led to the signing of a declaration of intent that would lay the foundation for closer and simplified direct cooperation between the research funding agencies of both countries. Under the agreement on bilateral scientific cooperation concluded in 2007, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) are to launch a new call for tenders for research projects, which is to serve as a pilot. The two agencies will determine and communicate the topics and timetable in the coming months.

In Asia, Japan is the main partner for Swiss researchers and research institutions. For example, between 2011 and 2016 the SNSF provided around CHF 101 million to finance 215 projects in Switzerland, which included cooperation between Swiss and Japanese researchers. Since 1961, 211 federal Excellence Scholarships have been awarded to Japanese researchers and artists.
