Professor Martina Caroni elected to the Marcel Benoist Foundation Board of Trustees

Bern, 25.01.2023 - At its meeting on 25 January, the Federal Council elected Martina Caroni, Vice-Rector for Teaching and International Relations at the University of Lucerne, to the Marcel Benoist Foundation Board of Trustees. The Foundation has been presided over by Nobel Laureate Didier Queloz since the beginning of the year.

The Marcel Benoist Foundation, established by the Federal Council in 1920, awards the Swiss Science Prize every year. Under the terms of the will of its founder, Marcel Benoist, the prize of 250,000 Swiss francs is awarded to researchers who have made a scientific invention or discovery that is beneficial to human life.

The Board of Trustees includes one representative from each university in Switzerland. Martina Caroni succeeds Martin Baumann, who until now has represented the University of Lucerne on the Board of Trustees since 2020. Ms Caroni is Tenured Professor of International, Constitutional and Comparative law and Vice-Rector for Teaching and International Relations at the University of Lucerne. She is also Vice-President of the National Commission for the Prevention of Torture (NCPT) and Delegate for Human Rights of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences.

The Foundation has been presided over by Nobel Laureate Didier Queloz since the beginning of the year. The Federal Council is responsible for electing the members of the Board of Trustees, including its chairperson. The head of the EAER department, Guy Parmelin, establishes the connection to the Foundation and presents the annual Swiss Science Prize.
