The world’s population is growing and the demand for food is rising. However, important resources such as soil and water are limited. What is more, settlement growth, erosion and pollution are decimating valuable farmland. These are major challenges for the agriculture and food industries – not just abroad, but also in Switzerland.
The federal government pursues an agriculture policy that contributes to productive and environmentally responsible farming in Switzerland. Its measures help Swiss farmers to respond to the needs of consumers and to society’s expectations, and to produce food competitively in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. To ensure this, the Federal Council has defined the following four key aims:
- Ensure secure and competitive food production and supply
- Use resources effectively and promote sustainable consumption
- Strengthen the vitality and attractiveness of rural areas
- Promote innovation and entrepreneurship in the agriculture and food industries
